Nine months after this gem
It's been almost 9 months since I made this tiny piece of game called Constant. It was made for a game jam where the main theme was running, and as any witty developer I wanted to do something unusual since theme running is not very exciting (on the surface that is). I wanted to make a story where piece of code is "running wild" across unfinished project that developer (I) abandoned(meta, so cool). Let's get out of the way some major cons that this game posses:
▢ It is not finished - Well it's a first porotype that I made (ever). I was very inexperienced and didn't know anything about developing video games, nor about game jams and how to properly submit, so of course that I rushed everything
▢ Movement is "janky" - this is a main complaint that I received from the people who took their time (It meant a lot to me that people did it, so grateful!) and played my game. It is one of the biggest takeaways from this jam, but we will come back to that later
▢ Text box as a main way of communication between character and player - People can't concentrate on platforming, running and then stopping to read (It's annoying many of them said). It breaks their flow.
With all of this said I'm very proud of this small piece of video game that started and avalanche of beauty in my life! From this moment on I slowly started to realize what I wanted to do, and that is to make games! I still get the chills when I start up Constant and It's probably because of two factors. First one is that music which was done by Blending_Options really captures the sense of loneliness and abandonment ( beauty of nothingness) that BP_Hero feels (sound and music is everything!). And second factor (this is purely subjective factor), Constant reminds me where I'm coming from as creator! Yes game is not finished, it has weird movement and it's very hard to play, but It tells us a story about some small part of the code that went wild, got it's sentience and now is trying to find it's path (through searching for it's creator). If I could chosen what would jump start my journey on becoming my dream-self and doing my dream job, that would be definitely this project.
So to finish this postmortem, some of the main takeaways are:
1) Experience above everything ! What ever I'm going to do, I'm going to focus on experience of that thing (if I want to make a game about being a pirate, I will make sure that everything revolves around that experience of being a pirate. From walking, shooting, interacting with other, etc... )
2) Always test! Testing is crucial, I can have a great idea but if I test it and it's not bringing out the emotions I was looking for I'm chaining it immediately!
3) Don't be afraid to make a mistake. It's not good to fear of the mistake, because mistakes are tokens that will lead to greatness! One step at the time builds a journey of 100000 steps, that's why I shouldn't be afraid to make a step (making a mistake)!
It is beautiful to see how much of a long way I've come when it comes to developing and more importantly creatively. I hope to bring more experience in this project and give BP_Hero It's deserved ending!
Thank you for reading this.
